Noam Chomsky lashes out at the Bush Administration on Iran’s Nuclear Rights

Avram Noam Chomsky, the prominent American critic of the US policies since the time of Vietnam War, in an interview given to IRNA from Berlin claimed that polls suggest a large majority of Americans support Iran’s nuclear power generation ambitions. He also chided the western media for whipping up sentiments against Iran as a state which ‘defied the world’.

He pointed out that Iran was backed by the 118 member Non Aligned Movement on its nuclear program yet the western media still stated the world is united against the countries uranium enrichment plans. Some time back, the US had plans of conniving with Israel to conduct surgical strikes to remove nuclear installations in Iran, but the steamrolling of the US economy, however avoided an unsolicited crisis.

The UN in its September 15 report confirmed that it could not find any ‘components of nuclear weapon’ or ‘related nuclear physics studies’ in Iran. Interestingly, contrary to the UN report, the US and its European allies harped on calling Iran being signatory to the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, had planned to develop nuclear weapons.

Though Chomsky was highly critical of the western media and the US’s intentions on Iran, he did not make any comment on the Iran President Ahmadinejad’s vicious threat of ‘wiping out Israel from the face of the earth’ at this point in time. Perhaps, Ahmadinejad’s got absolved while he remarked that he would be for a two-state Israili-Palestian peace solution.

He further added there could have been a ‘US-Iranian rapprochement in the last decade’. That did not happen because extremism, but repeated actions of the Bush administration not only antagonized Iran but also its own allies.

He observed, in the US, the mood is that the people fundamentally want to depart from the military approach which has been followed by successive administrations. Rather, they are looking forward to the country to focus on diplomatic and developmental approach.

However, Chomsky sounded like an Iranian citizen when he said that the US was hostile to Iran because of the country’s refusal to subordinate itself to the US will. Iran is an independent power. It is defiant of the US and that was not tolerated, he added.
