Planet Earth Reposes Hope on United Nations for Its Survival

The businesses around the globe depend on two key factors, political stability and climate, regardless of other numerous factors. These two factors are not in the control of any business, and every business have to withstand various other issues to survive in the market. But between the two, political stability is achievable through modi vivendi and the only organization that could do that is the United Nations (UN).

The major politically destabilizing agents of the world encountered by the UN ever-since its inception in 1945 are terrorism and climate change. In retrospection to the 6 decades of UN existence, its achievement besides peace and security is remarkable. The organization made its presence felt even in the spheres of social progress, economic development, education and health. During these years, with the co-operation of 192 recognized independent member states of the UN, it was able to ward off another world war so far.

In the new year of 2008, UN has to introspect whether they could be complacent of their achievements. Is it possible for them to overlook political instability in certain parts of the world without taking proactive steps to counter it? The developed countries and emerging economies have to make sincere compromises to strengthen the UN or else it would be too late. Perhaps the UN would not even get a decade to find solutions for various crises facing humanity at this decisive moment. Through globalization the world has traversed the unimaginable path of economic growth and prosperity. Any crisis, anywhere in the globalized world too impacted lives, every nook and cranny, just like that of the positives of globalization.

The Secretary General of the UN is the most prominent public figure and to manage the largest organization with diverse views in the world is perceivably an arduous task. As the new Secretary General completes one year in office on 1st Jan 2008, the road ahead is bumpy and uphill. The UN to sustain it endeavors in peace keeping, security, human rights, world health, child welfare etc., it has to look beyond leaders and nations. Moreover, the member states have to selflessly fund the projects without having state centric expectations. To have funds at the disposal world has to provide business friendly environment. Therefore, reinforcing the UN is the only hope the world has right now. Let the olive branches of the UN emblem bring peace and make the planet greener once again, especially in a year observed as International Year of Planet Earth 2008 by the UN.
